Just stay between the ditches.

In times of great change it's easy to over-think. Many a sleepless night can be spent fretting over potential challenges like complex supply chains, brand new or not-yet-hired employees, ambiguous requirements, and impossible timelines. The higher the uncertainty, the more likely we are to think that detailed, inter-locking project plans dotted with red, yellow, and green status indicators will somehow help us keep everything on track.

They won't. Instead, all that time spent creating task lists, identifying dependencies, and estimating work may overwhelm and even stymie your teams.

When your unknowns far outweigh your certainties, it's best to keep the rules somewhat loose. For inspiration, I suggest you get in your car and find some open road. First, clear your head by imagining your worries rolling over your hood and bouncing down the road behind you. Next, take a good look around. In addition to the scenery, you may notice that you're operating a highly complex, fast-moving, and potentially dangerous machine within a relatively small set of guidelines. There's not much governing your high-speed propulsion besides the speed limit. Essentially, your job is to avoid running into other vehicles and stay on the road. Or as a trucker might say, "keep your nose between the ditches."

Of course there's much more to driving than that, just like there's much more to managing through massive change in your business. As in driving, allow your team members to keep their heads clear and put as many tasks as possible into "auto-pilot" mode to ensure they don't get anxious or distracted. Define a very small set of essential, speed-limit type rules and provide the equivalent of wide shoulders and shallow ditches by way of frequent, open-forum meetings and safe ways to burn off the carbon.

The key is to keep moving. Don't worry, you'll get there.
